A Guide to Insurance Coverage for Losses from the September 11, 2001, Attacks is a primer for insured's who sustained consequential property or business losses. Losses were suffered not just by businesses and individuals in New York and the Washington, D.C., area but also by businesses around the world when airlines were shut down for several days; buildings, malls, and theme parks were closed; events were canceled; and mail wasn't delivered. Some of these losses continue today.

The article was authored by Kirk A. Pasich and Curtis D. Porterfield, partners in the firm of Howrey Simon Arnold & White. Leading experts in insurance law, Pasich and Porterfield are coauthors of the upcoming CCH publication Liabilities and Insurance for Computer and Internet Losses and Claims.

The article discusses several potentially applicable insurance coverage's, including coverage for business interruption losses and for the expenses incurred to avoid or minimize loss. It also addresses various exclusions (for war or terrorism, for example), determining causation and the number of occurrences, and the practical matters of making a claim for insurance coverage, overcoming the problem of lost or destroyed insurance policies, and proving the amount of the loss.
